Last April on a cold wet day, six-year-old Kaydon Leach disappeared from his home in Blount County, Tennessee.
He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, gray sweatpants with slip-on shoes, but one of Kaydon’s family dogs, a small black and white terrier was also missing.
At 7 o’clock that same evening, a large-scale search operation begun which included nearly 100 first responders in a 2,000-acre remote area of mountainous terrain.
Spokeswoman Marian O’Briant from Blount County Sheriff’s Office said: “We’ve had resources out all night, and we are being assisted by the military who searched the area at Top of the World by way of a Black Hawk helicopter with Flir technology. We’ve also had boots on the ground all night.”
Deputies spotted the little boy a half-mile away from his home around 22 hours after Kayden’s disappearance, but the closer they got, the louder the sound of growling became.
Chief Deputy Jeff French Blount County Sheriff’s Office said: ”The dog was with him, yes, the dog growled at the rescuers when they approached Kaydon, so the dog is a protector.”
Kayden wasn’t alone, he was in fact accompanied by his guardian angel…Chula.
When the boy was found on Tuesday afternoon by the rescue searchers, he was under the cover of a tree and cuddled up with his companion dog, throughout the foggy, drizzly night as temperatures fell into the mid-50s.
Neighbors in the community were notified about the missing boy through an app called ‘Next Door’. It allows neighbors to communicate with each other for updates once an alert message was sent.
McClurg explains “As soon as someone sends a message out, then everyone in the community receives it and can reply. Just sent out 7- something, I guess, that a boy, 6-year-old, had been lost, and everyone knew what to do.”
The app made it quick and easy to rally the entire community around the search.
After spending all night out in the rain Kaydon’s skin was purple so the search team wrapped him in blankets and a jacket and brought him to a hospital where he received medical attention.
The family released a statement once he was located “We’re so thankful to everyone, from local law enforcement agencies to volunteers, who helped us find Kaydon, The amount of support we have received has been tremendous, even from people we don’t even know. We appreciate all our friends and neighbors, and ask for privacy at this time.”
