One of the most terrifying things in the world is realizing your child is missing.
A parent’s first instinct is to love and protect their child, you can’t do anything to remedy the situation when they are gone.
Panic set in for parents of six-year-old Kaydon Leach when their son went missing with his pet dog on the evening of April 23.
A search began at 7 pm which involved 100 people going well into the night and the following day. Kaydon was eventually found but he wasn’t alone …
On the evening of Aril 23, Kaydon Leach disappeared in Blount County, Tennessee.
A rescue team from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation soon issued an Endangered Child Alert, grid searches were conducted through a 2,000-acre area overnight.
Kaydon was just six-years-old so fears for his safety were paramount.
The operation to find him was a large scale and included the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, K-9 teams, Blount County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, a Black Hawk military helicopter and volunteer search parties from the local area.
On April 24 at 3.30 pm local time Kaydon was found about a half mile away from his home after 22 hours, on the Top of the World Community in Blount County.
Despite the fantastic effort from everyone involved it’s not the police, fire department or volunteers who are being recognized as the true heroes of the tale.
Kaydon’s black and white terrier Chula was right there beside him.
Chula guarded his master, keeping him safe for an entire night in the rain.
According to Blount County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jeff French: “The dog actually growled at the rescuers when they approached Kaydon.”
Chula stayed by his master’s side in the dark and the rain, in the bleakness of the night.
When Kaydon was found he was frozen with the cold so rescuers wrapped him in jackets and carried him up the mountain to the road.
Later he was brought to Blount Memorial Hospital where the family expressed their gratitude for all those who took part in the search in a statement.
“We’re so thankful to everyone, from local law enforcement agencies to volunteers, who helped us find Kaydon.
The amount of support we have received has been tremendous, even from people we don’t even know. We appreciate all our friends and neighbors, and ask for privacy at this time.”
It’s true what they say about dogs; they really are man’s best friend.
