One hectic Friday night David Fabila was waiting tables at a California wine bar as he worked the outside on the patio section all by himself, the guests just kept pouring in.
David explained to his coworkers he was having a tough night as he has come from another job and was feeling exhausted.
At the same time a younger man sat down in David’s section, however, he was so busy he didn’t get an opportunity to speak with the young man a whole pile.
David spotted a handwritten note on top of the receipt when he went to close out the stranger’s tab.
It read “We’re young, but we’re worth serving.”
The bill total had come to $191.35 and that’s when David also spotted the tip which it matched the total the young man had just paid a total of more than $300.
David just couldn’t believe this was real and was sure the guest had made an error, so he repeatedly checked the numbers on the receipt.
“Unless you work in the service industry, you don’t really understand how much tips mean to a server, to a bartender,” David explains.
That the guy who left the note and tip was a college student called Steffen Berr who used to work as a server himself in a diner.
Steffen felt his gesture was the right thing to do to reward David’s hard work even though he didn’t know David’s circumstances about working two jobs and having three young children.
However, there was one other important detail Steffen didn’t know about David — something the father was all the more grateful to this stranger.
